Westchester

This neighborhood north of LAX has always earned devotees for its charm but the overflow from Silicon Beach has brought new attention to Westchester.  Westchester is also home to the beautiful main campus of Loyola Marymount University as well as the architecturally-intriguing Otis College of Art and Design.

Real Estate:  This area is full of single family homes for sale built in the 1940s for GIs returning from World War II and those in the aviation industry, fueling part of the post-war boom in the Los Angeles area. Some of these homes have now been torn down as newer larger homes are being constructed on the many sizeable lots in the area. There are some apartments for rent along the fringes of the neighborhoods.

Community Life:  Westchester is near the LAX airport and planes flying in are a common sight.  Lincoln Boulevard attracts the university crowd and offers a variety of restaurants (including several great pizza shops) and many retail boutiques. The Westchester Recreation Center has two indoor gyms, picnic areas, baseball diamonds, and a seasonal pool. It runs a variety of programs throughout the year. The Westchester Farmers’ Market is held Wednesdays in Westchester Park.

Education: Westchester is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District and his home to the Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet Schools which offers training in Aviation & Aerospace, Health & Sports Medicine, and Environmental & Natural Science.  There is also a community adult school as well as Cowan Avenue Elementary School, Kentwood Elementary School, and the Open Charter Magnet Schools. Private schools include Carousel, Westchester Lutheran School, and Visitation Elementary School.

Transportation:  Westchester is accessed by the 405 and 105 Freeway and Pacific Coast Highway. Several bus lines run through the area. Plans for a light-rail station near LAX should add more transportation options. The area is currently served by the Metro Green line.

Local Attractions: With so much to do in surrounding area and LAX nearby, much of Westchester’s attractions are more neighborhood-related. Pann’s Restaurant is a famed example of Googie-style architecture and has appeared in a number of movies and television shows. The Flight Path Learning Center & Museum honors aviation’s history and hosts a speaker series. The Westchester Fire Road crosses the bluff and offers a hike with views of the city.
